Rutgers University AEMB Chapter Constitution

Article I: Name

The name of this organization shall be the Rutgers University Chapter of Alpha Eta Mu Beta.

Article II: Purpose

The purpose of the Rutgers University Chapter of Alpha Eta Mu Beta shall be to bring into closer union and to mark in an outstanding manner those Biomedical Engineers at Rutgers University who have manifested a deep interest and marked ability in their chosen life work so as to promote an understanding of their profession and to develop its members professionally.

Article III: Membership

Section 1: Active Membership

  1. Active membership shall be open to junior and senior students in Biomedical Engineering at Rutgers University who are in good and regular standing.
  2. Only those juniors who have maintained an average scholastic grade in the upper one-fifth and those seniors who have maintained an average scholastic grade in the upper one-quarter of the Rutgers Biomedical Engineering class of which they are a member and have maintained a grade point average of 3.0/4.0 shall be eligible for active membership. Candidates for membership shall have completed at least seven semester credit hours of Biomedical Engineering courses.
  3. Candidates for membership in Rutgers University Chapter of Alpha Eta Mu Beta, in addition to the above stated requirements, must be of unimpeachable character, have ability to make use of the knowledge and information acquired, have capacity and willingness for hard work, and have a genial nature and ability to work in harmony with all sorts of people. The conduct of all members shall at all times meet the high standards of Rutgers University and Alpha Eta Mu Beta. Candidates must be interviewed by a current member approved by the Executive Board to insure their intentions and character are aligned with those of the Chapter.
  4. Candidates may be required to perform a service project chosen by the Executive Board. The project should be directed at the improvement of Biomedical Engineering at Rutgers University, such as tutoring, mentoring, or learning the history of Biomedical Engineering at Rutgers University.
  5. Transfer students ranked as juniors or seniors in the Biomedical Engineering program who have transferred from some other institution or school or from some other department in Rutgers University shall be eligible for active membership provided they have maintained a scholastic grade point average as stated in (b) above and provided they maintain this average for one term after the transfer. In all cases, candidates for membership shall have completed at least seven semester hours of Biomedical Engineering courses.
  6. To be eligible for membership, a graduate student 1) must be a candidate for a degree in Biomedical Engineering or Bioengineering from a university with an ABET accredited undergraduate program; 2) must have completed at least 12 semester hours of graduate study for students in a Ph.D. program, or eight semester hours of study in a Master's degree program, six of which are Biomedical Engineering or Bioengineering courses towards the degree; and 3) must have a grade-point-average of at least 3.75 on a 4.0 scale or rank in the upper one-third of eligible graduate students, whichever is higher.
  7. Membership shall not be denied on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or age.

Section 2: Election of Members

Election of members shall be conducted by secret ballot. A three-quarter vote of all active members present shall be required to elect a person to membership.

Article IV: Officers

Section 1: Officers

The officers of the Rutgers University Chapter of Alpha Eta Mu Beta shall be President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Engineering Governing Council Representative, and Biomedical Engineering Society Representative.

Section 2: Duties

The duties of the President shall be to organize and guide the chapter, and to preside over meetings. The Vice President shall preside over meetings that the President is unable to attend and aid the President in any way needed. The Secretary shall record the minutes of all meetings. The Treasurer shall keep an accurate account of all finances of the chapter. The Engineering Governing Council Representative shall attend Engineering Governing Council Meetings and represent the society’s interests. The Biomedical Engineering Society Representative shall foster a strong working relationship with the Biomedical Engineering Society at Rutgers.

Section 3: Term of Office

Officers shall be elected at the end of the Spring term to service during the next year. Each term of office shall last one year. Officers shall be elected by a simple majority of a quorum of members.

Section 4: Faculty Advisor

In addition to these officers, there shall be a faculty advisor. The faculty advisor shall be one of the Biomedical Engineering Department’s faculty members. The duties of the faculty advisor shall be to attend all meetings, help the organization with its affairs, and promote good relations between the faculty and the University and the members of the Rutgers University Chapter of Alpha Eta Mu Beta. The faculty advisor shall be elected by a simple majority of a quorum of members.

Article V: Meetings

Section 1: Number of Meetings

At least three official meetings shall be held each semester.

Section 2: Special Meetings

Special meetings may be called by the President.

Section 3: Motions

A simple majority shall be required to decide in favor of a motion.

Article VI: Committees

Committees may be appointed when projects arise that require the work of a committee. The President shall appoint the committee chairperson and committee members.

Article VII: Amendments

Amendments to this constitution may be proposed by any member at any official meeting. Amendments must receive a positive vote from three-fourths of the total number of members.
